This is by no means the only way to build a cage structure... I have seen all sorts of cool methods people have done for different vivariums, such as using Quickcrete painted on the Styrofoam, Silicone and coconut fiber, or even chicken wire coated with plaster. Do some research before you start and pick the method that makes the most sense for you.
What I Used:
What I Used:
- Some old Styrofoam
- 2 cans of Great Stuff spray foam
- Old Plastic Pots
- Lots of toothpicks
- 1 gallon Titebond III Waterproof wood glue (used this because it is supposed to be totally waterproof and animal-safe)
- Several blocks of Eco Earth compressed coconut fiber
- A small somewhat blunt kitchen knife
- Disposable gloves and mask (very important for spray foam!!!!)
- Old Shower Curtain (to protect surface from being really glued up)
Conclusion:
The climber so far seems to be doing relatively well. It did get a little spongy where the misting system hits it most directly, but I coated this section with rye seed, and shall see if this keeps it held together well. Otherwise it is hard as rock. So far the crabs do not seem interested in destroying it or the plants, and I hope they don't get any ideas. However, I think I might have managed to make it nice and solid and crab-proof, but you never really know...
I hope this gives you some ideas on one way a cage structure could be built- happy crabbing!
